EPL: Doctors Call To Know Their Role On The Pitch

The Premier League Doctors’ Group wants the role of medics in football to be clarified following the settlement of Eva Carneiro’s constructive dismissal case against Chelsea and Jose Mourinho.

A confidential settlement was reached between Carneiro and Chelsea at a tribunal on Tuesday, with the club sincerely apologizing after the ex-Blues doctor had alleged constructive dismissal against her former employees and victimization and discrimination against Mourinho.

Mark Gillett, chairman of the doctors’ group for Premier League clubs, has called for a meeting with the football authorities in light of Carneiro’s case, believing there needs to be a discussion held regarding the role of medics when it comes to treating players on the pitch.

“Following the situation we have had, it would be useful to sit down with the stakeholders in the game and clarify and strengthen the role of doctors working in football so that the responsibility in the doctor-patient relationship on the pitch is made crystal clear to everyone in football,The FA has not said an awful lot about this and the clarification is needed"

“It has been accepted now that Eva was just observing good medical practice. The Chelsea statement has admitted that she was just performing her role as a doctor and it is in everyone’s interests that that is recognized.”

While Chelsea issued a statement apologizing and admitting Carneiro had done the right thing in entering the Stamford Bridge pitch to treat Eden Hazard in the closing stages of the 2-2 draw with Swansea City in August, ex-Blues boss Mourinho has yet to say sorry.

The Chelsea statement did, however, say that Mourinho, who was alleged to have made discriminatory remarks to Carneiro, had thanked the doctor for the “excellent and dedicated support she provided.”
