Read Why AFN Is Considering Nigeria's Withdrawal From Rio 2016 Olympics

The trials for the Rio Olympic 2016 Games has come to an end, and preparations are in top gear all over the world.
But, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, (AFN, has revealed it is prepared to send selected athletes back to their respective homes if the Ministry of Sports fails to release funds for the final preparations for the Games scheduled to commence next month.
This disclosure was made in Sapele by AFN president, Solomon Ogba, who said that the federation was yet to receive funds from the Sports Ministry to round off Nigeria’s training ahead of the Games, Vanguard reports.
“I think as a federation we have done everything there is to be done. What happens from here I cannot say for now,” a frustrated Ogba said.
“Even at the moment, we are not sure of sending a team to the world junior championships.”
AFN technical director, Navy Commodore Omatseye Nesiama stated categorically that the athletes will be sent home if something was not done to remedy the situation.
“We have our team already and are supposed to go on the phase two preparations. But if we don’t have money to run our camp then we will send the athletes home.”
The Ministry of Sports has been grappling with lack of funds over the past year following a shortfall in national revenue, with the various federations, including the NFF, having to look elsewhere for funding.
