Shameful! US Cancels Visas Of House Members Over Sexual Misconduct
It would be recalled that the Speaker of the House was enlightened on the sexual misconduct of three members of the House of Reps, while they were on official assignment in the US.
James Entwistle had contacted Dogara over the issue but nothing was heard until reports say that their visas have been cancelled.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, on Thursday, ordered the investigation of the three members for the alleged sex scandal.
The Chairman, House Committee om Media and Public Affairs, Mr Abdulrazak Namdas, confirmed that the visas of the affected members had been cancelled by the US government.
Namdas said:
We are in receipt of a letter from the US Ambassador, alleging misconduct by some members of the National Assembly, who attended training in the United States of America.
The leadership of the House has commenced its own part of the investigation. When it is concluded, we will brief Nigerians further on this issue.
When we say we will conduct an investigation, we will conduct it and there will be a report
The members are:
Mr Mohammed Garba-Gololo (Bauchi State)
Mr Terse Gbillah (Benue State)
Mr Samuel Ikon (Cross River State)
They allegedly committed the crime during a trip to the US to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Programme on Good Governance organised by the US Government.
The three members were part of a team of 10 lawmakers nominated to attend the leadership programme that took place in Cleveland, Ohio between April 7 and 13 this year.
Terse Gbillah however wrote the US Embassy to Nigeria on Thursday, accusing the US of not giving them fair hearing.
He also expressed surprise in his letter that within hours of bringing the matter to the attention of the House, the US Government had gone ahead to cancel their visas. He then threatened to put forwards legal actions against the US Government and others concerned.
