It was gathered that Mikel has spoken to inbound Chelsea boss Antonio Conte and is prepared to move on until he holds further discussions with the manager when Italy’s Euro 2016 campaign ends.
Mikel had previously spoken about his future at Chelsea after Nigeria played Egypt back in March.
He made it clear that he does not want to sit on the bench.
He said:
“I have to play because one thing I don’t want to do is to sit on the bench like I did before.
“Wherever it is I just want to play. When this season ends we will definitely sort out the contracts.”
However, Chelsea had announced players released and retained for the 2016/17 season with the club retaining John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses and Kenneth Omeruo for next season.
But should he remain at Chelsea, Mikel could also miss the start of his team’s season after being in a provisional 35 man squad for the Olympic Games as one of Nigeria’s over 23 players.
